Report released into Perth Airport capacity

Airservices Australia has today released a study into the capacity of Perth Airport as part of a broad suite of initiatives underway to address delays and congestion.

The study, undertaken by the United Kingdom’s air navigation service provider, NATS as part of Airservices collaborative Airport Capacity Enhancement (ACE) program, saw a team of experts from NATS visit Perth in February 2012 to investigate opportunities to improve airport capacity.

NATS is internationally recognised as a leader in the provision of air traffic control and consultancy services including some of the busiest airspaces in the world.

The 119-page technical report looks at current and future operational performance improvement opportunities. In doing so, it makes a range of recommendations to shape and prioritise future initiatives undertaken collaboratively by all parties involved.

Airservices Chief Executive Officer, Margaret Staib said that Airservices has been working closely with Perth Airport and airlines to deal more cohesively with the challenges of growth in air traffic.

“Growth at Perth Airport, fuelled largely by the success of the resource industry and demand for fly-in, fly-out services, has been phenomenal,” Ms Staib said.

“This was a proactive study initiated by Airservices to look at the issues of congestion and delay and what action can be taken by airlines, the airport and Airservices to ease congestion and make better use of existing infrastructure.

The report identifies opportunities for Airservices, Perth Airport and the airline community to work together to establish a robust operations concept, incorporating both airfield and airspace to improve the airport capacity.

NATS has made a number of suggestions for improvement which will require action by Airservices, Perth Airport and airline operators over the next 24 months. This includes improvements in operational efficiency, airspace management and better airport infrastructure.

Initiatives that will be undertaken include reduced runway occupancy times of aircraft, improved aircraft sequencing to the airport and better use of taxiways.

An airline schedule coordination system will also be introduced by Perth Airport which will see the allocation of landing and take-off slots at the airport.

“Some of the improvements will be realised in the short term, while others are more incremental and will take time to realise” Ms Staib said.
