The volcanic eruption of Mount Sangeang Api in Indonesia yesterday afternoon has resulted in a volcanic ash plume that has affected airline operations in Darwin this morning, 31 May.
With the assistance of the Bureau of Meteorology’s Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC), Airservices is closely monitoring the plume in the atmosphere.
Detailed information on the volcanic ash cloud is being provided to the airlines, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and Airservices by the Darwin VAAC.
Airservices National Operations Centre is working with airlines to minimise any disruption by rerouting aircraft around the ash cloud wherever possible.
Travellers are advised to contact their airline for more specific and up-to-date information. Decisions on whether or not flights will operate will be made by individual airlines and operators.
Further updates will be provided. For the latest meteorological information, refer to the Bureau of Meteorology’s website, www.bom.gov.au
