Airservices technical trainees graduate at ceremony in Wagga Wagga

Airservices first group of technical trainees have graduated with a Diploma of Electronics and Communications Engineering at a ceremony in Wagga Wagga today.

The 15 graduates will now join the nation’s air navigation service provider as technical officers where they will work with cutting-edge equipment and systems as the organisation rolls out a $900 million, five year capital expenditure program.

They will join more than 280 technical officers stationed around the country as part of Airservices Technical and Asset Services group.

Airservices Chief Executive Officer, Greg Russell, said the recruits have undertaken a trade-specific curriculum incorporating practical training on Airservices equipment including instrument landing systems, radars and other air navigation aids.

“Trainees learn about communications, surveillance, navigation aids and data systems and how to maintain safety-critical aviation equipment,” Mr Russell said.

The two-year diploma was delivered through a partnership with TAFE NSW’s Riverina Institute.

“Together with TAFE NSW, the Wagga Wagga City Council and the Regional Development Board, Airservices is committed to offer regional training opportunities.

“This is an ideal opportunity for young people and those with an interest in combining theoretical and practical learning to gain an industry-recognised qualification while learning skills which will be needed to ensure the future of Australia’s robust air navigation system.”

Technical trainee Nicholas Potrzeba 25, of Townsville was also presented with the inaugural Airservices Award for Technical Excellence in recognition of his consistent academic performance, peer leadership and pursuit of technical excellence.

The graduates, who have been living in Wagga Wagga during their training, will now take up permanent positions with Airservices across the country.

Three trainees who began the traineeship in 2010 have already commenced work as Airservices technical officers in Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne after completing their diplomas early.
