Letter to the Sydney Morning Herald - Tower services at Avalon Airport

08-07-2011 - 08 July 2011

Dear Editor,

Your article of 6 July ('Airline threatened with millions in fines amid questions on empty control towers') does not present an accurate account of air traffic control arrangements at Avalon Airport.

Airservices provides a tower service at Avalon between 7am and 8pm daily in line with requirements set by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority. Approach services to Avalon Airport are provided from our Melbourne Centre 24 hours a day, irrespective of whether or not the control tower is open.

The Tiger Airways incident in question occurred during the approach phase of the flight and while it was under the control and supervision of air traffic controllers in our Melbourne Centre.

It was immediately reported by Melbourne air traffic control to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, in accordance with our commitment and statutory responsibility for providing safe air operations.

Yours sincerely,
