Fatal accident in Darwin
08-08-2011 -Airservices is deeply saddened by the loss of life in a road accident in Darwin yesterday.
Our thoughts and sympathies are with the families of those killed and our own fire fighters affected by the incident.
Our airport-based aviation rescue and fire fighting (ARFF) service was responding to a request for assistance from the NT Fire and Rescue Service with a large fire in a cold store.
ARFF responded with a fire vehicle and three fire fighters.
At approximately 8.45am while en route to the incident the fire vehicle was involved in a collision with another vehicle on Berrimah Road.
Two of the four occupants of the second vehicle received fatal injuries. Our fire fighters provided immediate assistance to the occupants of the vehicle.
NT Police have impounded the fire vehicle. Airservices capacity to provide fire protection at Darwin Airport is unaffected by this action.
Airservices ARFF vehicles are road-registered and fire fighters are trained in responding to emergencies on public roads.
We are co-operating fully with NT Police inquiries.
